Homemade and Handmade wedding invitations

Many couples choose to create their own wedding invitations from home. This method is not only cost effective, but it lets you be creative and offers that special personal touch. Here are some of the factors to consider when creating your own homemade wedding invitations:

    • Paper
    • Graphics
    • Ornaments
    • Wording
    • Envelopes
    • Printing
    • Additional pieces

Paper: The first item needed when creating your own handmade invitations. Your options are to buy blank stock from a craft store or buy blank invitations already sized and maybe even pre decorated. One other option is buying parchment, or creating your own decorative parchment paper.

Blank invitations are a great option for wanting to print your own invitations. They will come in an invitation size, so no cutting required. The can also come decorated with borders or graphics, saving you from having to create a design yourself. They may also come with the envelopes for mailing and you can even purchase matching rsvp cards, thank you notes and more. All that you need to do is decide on your wording and feed them through your printer.

Purchasing your own paper is also popular. You can find the perfect color that matches your bridesmaid dresses, or flowers. You can get creative and make fancy edging, teared edges or the look of a die-cut invitation. Purchase vellum to make an overlay or cut-out, the possibilities are endless. You have total control when creating a handmade invitation and choosing the paper that you want.

Graphics: If you are artistic, you can create your own graphics. Honestly, we all seen wedding invitations with poor graphics, it just leaves a bad impression. If you are not artistic though, you can find wedding clipart or purchase graphics from websites who specialize in wedding invitation graphics. You can also design with just your typography, or fonts. You can also use color, layers and borders to create a beautiful design. You do not need graphics on your homemade invitations, but you have the freedom to put anything you could want.

Ornaments: The most popular ornament for wedding invitations is obviously bows. Bows from satin, silk, plain ribbon, string, the options are endless. Bows are usually placed on 1 page wedding invitations. They can be for pure ornanmental reasons or for holding layers together, like vellum overlays. Bows are a perfect way to incorporate the wedding colors into your stationary and give homemade invitations that touch of elegance.

Ribbon can used in it's flat form as well, not in a bow. Running ribbon up the side or across the top will create a beautiful accent. Using ribbon to tie a folded invitation closed is also a nice feature.

String, leaves, silk, flower petals and more can also be incorporated into homemade invitations.

Wording: Probably the most important part of your wedding invitation (beside getting them sent out in time) is the wording you choose. There are many different options for wedding invitation wording and they can be found on this page: wedding invitation wording.

Envelopes: If you are creating your own invitations, you will need to purchase envelopes to mail them. If you purchased blank invitations to print yourself, they probably came with envelopes. You can find envelopes at your local craft stores as well as at business supply stores. You could even make your own envelopes, if you are very ambitious! Envelopes are usually white, but you can slelect a color if you find it suits your invitation and style better.

Envelope addressing should be by hand, not by labels.

Printing: Printing your own invitations is by far the most cost effective option. However, you have to be careful when doing so. Be sure to feed your invitations in the printer straight to avoid angled text. Be sure to have an extra ink cartridge (or toner cartridge) on hand in case you run out. Be sure to run test invitations through before you leave your print job to continue itself. Blck is the most common color for printing, unless you have a reason to choose another, stick with black. It will print the sharpest and most readable.
