Invitation envelopes...

Addressing and stuffing the invitation envelopes is much easier than creating the perfect wedding invitation, but, there are still some points you should know about the envelopes and etiquette.

Stuffing envelopes

When inserting invitations, or inner envelopes, the folded edge (for a folded invitation), the left edge and inserts are to face the back of the envelope. Inner envelopes are to be left unsealed with the flap away from the person inserting.

One or two envelopes?

Formal, third person invitations, are traditionally inserted into an inner envelope then placed in an outer envelope for mailing. The inner envelope has the names of the invitees, no first names or address required. Ie. Mr. and Mrs. Smith or Miss Smith and Guest.

Addressing envelopes

Married couple
: Wedding invitations should be addressed to both members

Unmarried couple living together : Both names on separate lines.
Ie. Ms. Christy Smith and
Mr. John Doe

Inviting children : Children over 13 should receive their own invitation. Younger siblings may receive a joint invitation.
ie. The Misses Smith or The Messrs. Smith on the outer envelope. The inner envelope would then bear the names of each of the children; 'Bobby, Jimmy and Stephen'.

Or, you can include the children's names on the inner envelope, one line below the paren't names.

Whole family : Only address an invitation to 'Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Family' if you are inviting only their household. 'Family' does not include relatives outside of those in the one household. Young adults should receive their own invitation.

Abbreviations

You do not use abbreviations on your invitations, nor should you on your envelope. You should use 'Street, 'Avenue', 'Crescent', etc. The state could be abbreviated on the envelope due to the Post Office prefering this format.
